City Piran

Excursions along the coast of Piran

The city Piran is located on the promontory of the Piran Peninsula - Cape Madona and lies in the immediate vicinity of Portorož, and on the other side of the Fiesa.

Some consider Piran one of the most beautiful towns on the coast, precisely because of its medieval walls, which are also fully protected as a cultural/historical monument. It is a medieval, once also a fishing and ivory-growing town. Rt Madona was already inhabited in pre-Roman times, but the town is first mentioned in the 7th century.

The characteristic of this seaside town, as in the city of Koper (in the old town), is that there are narrow streets with tightly packed houses. Maybe this is even more obvious in the city of Piran and we will feel it even more if we park at the top of the city and go down past the church into the city center towards the main square. At the top of the town on a hill is the baroque church of St. George with a bell tower that is 48.7m high and the angel Michael is also placed on top. The church got its present appearance in 1637.

The church is the central artistic monument of Piran. The construction was inspired by Venetian architecture. Before it, there were even older buildings on this site. The church is covered with a flat ceiling. The interior of the church is decorated with paintings and frescoes created by Venetian artists. St. George marked the Piran church, which is why we can find him in many places. Next to the church, the church complex also consists of a baptistery and a free-standing bell tower. The most artistically perfect is the bell tower, which must be the most beautiful shot of St. Mark's campanile in Venice.

The rotating statue at the top of the angel Michael turns in a vert (spins) and thus also predicts the weather. Piran is also known for Tartini, after whom the central square was also named. This was the most famous Pirančan. He worked in various places, was a successful music theorist, teacher and composer. In history, the city of Piran was most influenced by its nearby neighbor Venice, this can also be seen in the architecture of the buildings, some of which are very Venetian in style with beautiful Venetian balconies and arches. On the buildings, this influence can also be seen in the form of a lion on one of the typical Venetian buildings. Piran was part of the Republic of Venice for 500 years. Piran is a comprehensive urban and architectural monument. We can best see and admire the compactness of the city from the top of the church. Piran also had a maritime tradition.

The seat of the Piran Maritime Museum is owned by Gabriela de Casto and is the central monument of classicist architecture in Piran. The most valuable in the museum are the models of ship models and they are masterfully made after different types of ships. Piran was also connected to the sea in another way, as they say and it is an old saying that Piran grew on salt. Salt was the main source of income, but today they take care of preserving the heritage of salt production. It is also considered one of the most photogenic places. If you visit Piran, you will see that it offers more than just relaxing and lying on the beach.

The beaches are mostly on the piers and there is also a wild beach, because the main goal of visiting Piran is not exactly that, soaking in the sea, but rather relaxation and the pulse of this beautiful city, which you will experience during your visit. The footpath that leads to Piran along the coast is also the most popular in all seasons, this is the path that leads from Fiesa to Piran and takes you to the top of Piran where part of the wall begins.

Visiting Piran is beautiful at any time of the year, but it is especially nice to visit it in spring and summer, when it is not so hot and you can freely walk and explore the city and its streets and enjoy the architecture and history of this city.
