Baked apple stuffed with walnuts

Baked Apple Stuffed with Walnuts

Ingredients (for 4 servings):

4 medium apples (firmer varieties work best, such as Jonagold, Idared, or Granny Smith)

100 g (about 1 cup) chopped or ground walnuts

2–3 tablespoons honey (you can also use maple syrup or brown sugar)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

 A pinch of nutmeg (optional)

 1 teaspoon butter per apple

 Juice of half a lemon

 Raisins or dried cranberries (optional)

A few tablespoons of water or apple juice for baking

Instructions:

Prepare the apples
Wash the apples and carefully core them, removing the seeds and creating a cavity for the filling. Be careful not to cut all the way through—leave the bottom intact to hold the filling.

Make the filling
In a bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and optional raisins or dried cranberries. Add a few drops of lemon juice for brightness.

Stuff the apples
Fill each apple with the walnut mixture, pressing it in gently. Place a small piece of butter on top of each filled apple.

Bake the apples
Arrange the apples in a baking dish. Pour a few tablespoons of water or apple juice into the dish to prevent drying out. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 25–35 minutes, or until the apples are tender but still hold their shape.

Serve
Serve warm or lukewarm. These are delicious on their own, or paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a spoonful of yogurt.

Origin of the Dish

Baked apples stuffed with walnuts are a traditional dessert from Central and Eastern Europe. Variations of this recipe can be found in German, Austrian, Slovenian, Slovak, Polish, and Russian cuisines. Known as Bratapfel in Germany or pečena jabolka in Slovenia, this dessert has long been a winter favorite.

Historically, it was often prepared in colder months, when fresh fruit was scarce but apples could be stored easily. Ingredients like honey, walnuts, and dried fruit were common and accessible, even in rural areas. Thanks to its simplicity, comforting aroma, and rich flavor, this dessert has remained a classic for generations—and today, it's also appreciated as a healthier and naturally sweet treat.
